Abia State Government is working to solve Pension payment challenges – @JohnOkiyiKalu

Abia State government says it is working tirelessly to tackle the challenges facing the payment of pensions in the state.

Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, who disclosed this while addressing pensioners in Umuahia said Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is not happy with the pensioners payment system in the state and is quietly reforming it to deliver a more sustainable system that will ensure that current and future challenges are tackled in favor of senior citizens of the state.

Chief Okiyi Kalu revealed that efforts are being made to ensure pensioners receive their pay every month and appealed to them to exercise a little patience with the government to enable it deploy necessary systems to eliminate wastage within the system and shore up internally generated revenue of the state.

The Information boss noted that the state government will need more internally generated revenue inflow to stabilize Pension and Salary Payments and informed that arrangement is being made to streamline revenue collection in the state to prevent leakages into private pockets.

He assured pensioners that their welfare is paramount to the government having acknowledged their contributions to the development of the state and thanked them for their patience, support and peaceful disposition towards the state government led by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

Speaking on behalf of the pensioners, the State Chairman of Abia State Civil and Public Service Pensioners Association, Dr Emmanuel Okparanta commended Governor Okezie Ikpeazu for his efforts to clear arrears of pensions owed them, including those inherited from past administrations in the state and appealed for more attention to enable their members tackle some of the challenges facing them.

Dr Okparanta called for the harmonisation of payment of pensions to help workers and pensioners receive their salaries at the same time and to look into the payment of gratuities to members who have not received theirs.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Elder Ifeanyi Agbai, accompanied the Commissioner to the interactive meeting which is part of ongoing efforts of the Ikpeazu administration to transparently engage critical stakeholders in the state.
