LASIEC to conduct local government elections in 2021

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), under the leadership of Hon. Justice Ayotunde Phillips(Rtd), has expressed its readiness to conduct elections into the local government next year.

This was reportedly made known to the public by the chairman of Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), Hon. Justice Ayotunde Phillips(Rtd), who directed her staff to buckle-up at work this year in preparation for next year's local government elections in the state.

In her new year message to LASIEC staff, the retired bencher urged them to improve on their work abilities in readiness for the conduct of a free and fair local government elections in 2021.

Recall that, all the local government Chairmen and councillors in the 20 local government and 37 Local council development areas (LCDA), were elected in 2017, under the government of the immediate past governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode.

The new development to conduct elections in 2021, has however put an end to the controversy over the tenure of local government Chairmen and counselors, which the State House of Assembly had increased from three to four years per term and signed into law with the consent of the former Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

This decision to conduct elections into local government next year, has unsettled the current occupiers of those seats, majorly in All Progressive Congress (APC), as many of them may likely not get a second term ticket due to high competition within the party.

It is generally believed that, the ruling APC will have a field day at the election, but Justice Ayotunde has promised a level playing ground for all stakeholders and political parties.

The other political parties that may contest keenly in the next year's local government elections are PDP, ADP, Accord and Labor Party.
