Enyimba chairman Felix Anyansi-Agwu has told SCORENigeria winning this year’s CAF Confederation Cup will complete ‘The People’s Elephant’ success on the continent and so the high premium placed on the competition.
Wasiu Alalade hit the back of the net as Enyimba earned a stoppage-time win over Club Athletique Renaissance Aiglon (CARA), in Wednesday night’s last Group C match in Aba.
“We’ve won the CAF Champions League two times (in 2003 and 2004)).We’ve also won the CAF Super Cup twice (in 2004 and 2004). The only trophy for club side football on the African continent still missing on our trophy shelf is this Confederation Cup,” Anyansi told SCORENigeria
“We have not reached this stage of the competition (quarterfinal) before.
“Hopefully, we will continue to give it our best attention, working hard to achieve victory for the club, our people, our state and Nigeria.”
He added: “Yes, we are in the quarterfinals now, the road is still far ahead, but remember a journey of 1000 miles starts with a singe step.
“Our focus now is on the quarterfinals and after that we take it up from there”.
The draw for the quarterfinals will be staged on September 3.
Anyansi also paid glowing tribute to Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, for his huge support morally and financially especially in the refurbishment of Aba stadium which ensured their return after three years sojourn in Calabar, Port Harcourt and Uyo.
“East or West, home is the best. You can see every singe seat here is taken up despite the N500 gate fee,” he said.
“We cannot thank the Governor enough. You know the cost implication of playing away from home for three years.
“If for nothing else the hotel accommodation bill, so we are grateful to His Excellency. ”
Enyimba have won 29 trophies under Anyansi-Agwu’s leadership including two CAF Champions League titles, two CAF Super Cups, seven NPFL titles, three domestic cups, Community Shields among others.
The People”s Elephant are Nigeria’s only surviving club in this year’s CAF inter-club competitions following the early elimination of Plateau United and MFM from the Champions League and Akwa United from the Confederation Cup.
