HoR moves to override Buhari on three bills

The process of overriding President Muhammadu Buhari on some of the bills he refused assent to is gaining traction, as the House of Representatives on Thursday passed through second reading three of such bills.

The bills are: A Bill for an Act to Establish the Federal University, Wukari (Senate Bill); A Bill for an Act to Provide for Establishment of the Chartered Institute of Treasury Management by Oker Jev  (APC, Benue) and A Bill for an Act to Establish the Chartered Institute of Public Management of Nigeria by Sylvester Ogbaga (PDP, Ebonyi).

Muhammed Monguno (APC, Borno) who presented the bill on the Federal University of Wukari said that the decision of the President to reject the bill is surprising, as he noted that the university is already in existence, adding that the only bill seek to provide the legal framework for the institution.

“The President cited some reservations on the wordings of the bill, we checked the wording by comparing the bill with all other federal universities and they are same.”

On the second bill, Emmanuel Oker-Jev (APC, Benue) who sponsored the bill, in his lead debate, noted that the bill is a product of recommendation by the reform committee set up by the 8th Assembly.

He said that some of the reasons cited by the President would be considered during committee consideration.

The three bills were passed for second reading when the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara put the bills to vote.
